How to recognize disinformation, think critically, and actively engage in societal affairs? The answers to these questions were sought by our students, teachers from nearby schools, and journalists from the conservative newspaper Postoj during a workshop held on February 4, 2025, at our school. The event combined education with lively discussion and provided new perspectives on how to navigate the information world.
At the workshop, teachers from various schools gathered to learn practical techniques for developing critical thinking. The interactive activities focused on critical thinking, civic engagement, and recognizing disinformation. The teachers discovered new methods that they can now use in teaching English and civic education, making their lessons more engaging and connected to current issues.
An important part of the workshop was also the presentation of the results of the Erasmus+ VoyAGE project, which is coordinated by our Gymnázium. This project supports young people in developing critical thinking and active participation in societal affairs. The outcome of the project is the e-book Empowered Minds and a series of podcasts, VoyAGE Podcasts, which can be used not only by our students, but also by teachers of English and civic education in other schools. The workshop was led by Mgr. Anna Trenčanová and Mgr. Jana Machynová.
The students appreciated the opportunity to debate directly with journalists and gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of public opinion manipulation. Journalists from Postoj offered interesting insights into the spread of disinformation and how young people can actively influence society.
The entire event took place in a friendly and dynamic atmosphere full of exchanges of opinions and new ideas. It was once again confirmed that teaching and learning can be not only useful, but also fun and inspiring. We look forward to more similar events that will help us grow and think more innovatively!
